Patsy O'Brien makes Mayo political history
Mayo Fine Gael Councillor Patsy O'Brien has made political history.
The Hollymount-based representative has registered the highest ever first preference vote by a candidate in the local elections in the county.
It has been confirmed that he received a total of 2,955 number one votes in the Claremorris electoral area, breaking the record of 2,921 set by Castlebar Independent Councillor Michael Kilcoyne in the Castlebar Electoral area in 2014.
O'Brien was 1,010 votes over the quota and was elected on the first count. His previous highest total was 2,760 achieved in 2009.
