Passing of former Mayo soccer referee

The death has taken place of Gus Alexander, Woodview Court, and formerly of Knockmore Village.

The deceased was widely known and respected in Mayo soccer circles from his years as a referee and news of his passing is widely mourned within the sport.

He was also a founder member of Conn Rangers FC and played for the club for many years.

Paying tribute to him, Councillor Seamus Weir said Gus was a wonderful character who got immense enjoyment from his sporting endeavours.

“Everybody who knew Gus had good time for him. He will be greatly missed in the community and I extend my deepest sympathy to his family.”

Gus will be sadly missed by his sons Victor and David, sister Peg (Downey), grandchildren Aoife and Joseph, daughters-in-law Paula and Rosie, nieces and nephews, neighbours, former work colleagues in Mayo County Council, and a wide circle of friends.

His remains will be reposing at Lynn's Funeral Home, Killala, on Saturday from 4.30 p.m. with removal at 7.30 p.m. to St. Patrick's Church, Killala.

Requiem Mass takes place on Sunday at 11.30 a.m., followed by burial in Rathfran Cemetery.
