Irish Rail issues apology to Mayo customers over 'discomfort'

IRISH Rail has apologised to customers who experienced discomfort with very heavy demand on the 07.50 Westport to Heuston this morning.

In response to a request for a statement, the company's communications manager Barry Kenny stated: “All available trains were in use on what was a very busy morning around the network with additional trains operating for the All-Ireland finals.

“This - combined with mechanical issues on a set - meant we simply did not have any additional capacity available.

“While trains can safely accommodate heavy loading, we recognise that this would have been very uncomfortable for those travelling longer distances.

“Any customers who prebooked with us, and who did not have their seat or an alternative, can claim a refund, with details available at www.irishrail.ie."

Mr. Kenny was responding to concerns raised by the cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Councillor Brendan Mulroy, a passenger on the train.

He posted a comment on his Facebook page stating the train was overbooked with people standing and sitting in the aisles due to overcrowding.

He wrote “ (There is) Mayhem on the Westport to Dublin train. It is not good enough Irish Rail. Step up to the mark.”

The Westport-based representative later shared a photograph of the overcrowdng with the accompanting words: “There is no room to get on the train. Health and safety out the window. Someone is going to get hurt here.”

Councillor Mulroy wants the council to hold an urgent meeting with representatives of Irish Rail over the situation.
