Shane Rice the master of Castlebar Captain's Prize
SHANE Rice, a director of Master Carpets, has been crowned 2019 Captain's (Gerry O'Malley) Prize at Castlebar Golf Club.
He carded a magnificent 62, a round that featured 14 pars and two birdies, to scoop the prestigious title with two shots to spare over second-placed Van Jennings.
Jennings also shot a 62, but Rice, vice-captain of the club's Pierce Purcell Shield team that savoured provincial glory a number of weeks ago, had a better opening round than the gallant Jennings.
Rice's aggregate score over 36 holes was nine under with Jennings standing on -7.
In third place was Declan Prendergast on -6 with Brian Ainsworth, the leader after the opening round, finishing fourth on -5.
Four players were in joint fifth spot on -3: Carl Rose, Fintan Phelan, John McHale and Padraig Rice.
In joint ninth spot were Joey McDonnell and Johan Collins.
