Wettest August day in 21 years

A MAYO weather station recorded its wettest August day in over 20 years last month.

The highest daily rainfall in the country was 48.7mm, recorded at Newport on August 30. This was the station's wettest August day since 1998.

Newport fared marginally better than Claremorris where, the previous month, a highest daily rainfall reading of 49.5mm was recorded on July 19 – its wettest July day since 2010.

Total rainfall in Newport in August was 228.9mm, in Claremorris 225.8mm, Knock airport was a little better at 207.6mm, and Belmullet had a rainfall reading of 160.8mm.

Temperature for the month of August was above average in most places in the country, with mean temperatures for the month lowest at Knock airport at 14.1 °C. The month's lowest temperatures were recorded on August 13 at Claremorris – the reading was 4.6 °C.

Unsurprisingly, it was sunniest in the east of the country. Percentage of monthly sunshine values ranged from 85% (monthly sunshine total of 105.1 hours) at Knock airport to 127% (190.6) at Casement Aerodrome in Dublin.
