Western Care founder angry over treatment of disabled in cost-cutting move
A FOUNDER member of the Western Care Association has hit out over the systematic assessing by Social Welfare Services of the weekly disability allowance paid to vulnerable members of society.
Johnny Mee said the practice, designed as a cost-cutting measure, is causing anxiety and fear among a sector of the community which finds it difficult to stand up for itself.
The former Labour Party county councillor said hundreds of people around the county have had their allowances reduced in recent weeks following an assessment of means.
The recipients are obliged to disclose details of their savings, money set aside for them by their families when they become elderly and have to live alone.
Mr. Mee said the practice is causing a great deal of distress and anger among families fearful over the future of a family member with a disability.
“The person with a disability feels frightened and somewhat intimidated by the forms and paperwork they are asked to complete.
“It is an example of how the most vulnerable members of society are being targeted under the guise of saving taxpayers' money.
"It reflects very poorly on a government that is guilty of wasting million of taxpayers money on major projects because of a lack of accountability, the details of which I don't need to elaborate upon.
“What I am asking is that people with a disability and their families be allowed to live with dignity and respect.”
A spokesperson for the Social Welfare Services said people who feel aggrieved have a right to appeal any decision and request an independent review.
