New Mayo digital hub to bring 200 jobs and investment
THE Ballina Digital Hub in the former Military Barrracks is expected to create over 200 jobs in the town centre.
Senator Michelle Mulherin said: "Approval of Urban Regeneration and Development Fund funding by the Minister of Housing, Eoghan Murphy, for the Ballina Innovation Quarter project is wonderful news for the region.
“I have been working on securing this project for Ballina over a long period of time and pulled out all the stops to get it over the line.
"I was delighted to secure a commitment from the Taoiseach and Minister Murphy last December for the funding and development of the project under the Urban Regeneration Fund - Project Ireland 2040.
"Technology, digital media and internet companies are expected to create 210 jobs within three years in the new enterprise cluster that will provide office spaces for 20 companies nurturing an atmosphere of creativity and support where the digital companies can grow their business.
"The hub will also be the home for a distillery which will create jobs in the production of high-end rum.
"The Ballina Digital Hub is further evidence of the commitment of the Fine Gael-led government to rejuvenate Ballina and north and east Mayo.
"As a collaborative space for digial companies to scale and grow, Ballina Innovation Quarter will kickstart significant enterprise and entrepreneurial activity and increase the attractiveness of Ballina and surrounding communities for further investment.
"This project will also restore a centre piece in our built heritage, the Military Barracks, built in 1742, and unlock its tourism and cultural potential.
“Ballina Chamber of Commerce and local businesses played a crucial part in bringing this project to fruition and their support and enterprise will ensure Ballina is recognised as a place to start and grow a digital business.
"The Ballina Digital Hub is a €7m project and €3.2m has already been allocated towards the delivery of phase one of the project. Part 8 planning permission has already been granted for the project by the Council.
"After engagement between the council and department officials the project will now proceed to detailed design."
