Passing of former League of Ireland star from Mayo
THE death has been announced of Ballina native Noel Melvin, one of the finest soccer talents Mayo has ever produced.
His passing, at the age of 48, has evoked an immense sense of loss and sorrow within the sport.
Noel was the first recipient of the Mayo Football League's Young Footballer of the Year Award in 1989 after starring in the county's run to the final of the FAI Youths Inter-League Cup.
In a tribute tonight, Ballina Town FC described him as one of the club's greatest ever players.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time," the club stated on its Facebook page.
He was a member of the club's side that qualified for the FAI Senior Cup against Shelbourne in the 1989/90 season, a match the attracted one of Belleek Park's biggest ever crowds.
Noel subsequently enjoyed a distinguished career in the League of Ireland with Monaghan Town, Dundalk FC and Finn Harps. He was Dundalk's Player of the Year in 1999/2000.
Deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Cathy, son Marc, daughter Sophie, and the Melvin family on their loss.
May his gentle soul rest in peace.
