Pressure building to sort out derelict hotel
LOCAL public representatives are ramping up the pressure on Mayo County Council to sort out the eyesore Imperial Hotel building in Castlebar.
Councillor Ger Deere has a motion down for a local area meeting next Wednesday calling on the council to decide on the future use of the Imperial Hotel and immediately commence refurbishment works.
Earlier this month, a full meeting of the local authority, council management were pressed to outline their future plans for this and other unused council-owned buildings in the county town by Councillor Michael Kilcoyne.
The Land League, one of the most important movements in Irish history, was founded in the Imperial Hotel on August 16, 1879.
