Green wave surging across Mayo
THE Mayo Green Party is experiencing a surge in membership numbers in recent months.
Mags Sheehan, secretary for the group, says they are welcoming a lot of new members, especially since the European elections campaign started earlier this year.
She commented: “There is a new-found awareness around climate change and the biodiversity emergency, and people know that we need to take action urgently.”
The rise in Green support has come at a time when the Arctic ice is melting at an alarming rate, much faster than experts predicted, forests burn all around the globe, there have been record breaking temperatures across Europe, and horrific destruction in the Bahamas. At the same time, schoolchildren all around the world are ‘striking for their future’, led by young people like Greta Thunberg.
“The Green Party fully supports young people around the world who have taken drastic action. They know that they will be the ones most affected by impending climate chaos,” said Saoirse McHugh, who ran a very successful campaign as candidate for the European Parliament.
“My generation is now beginning to stand up for our future, and demand a change in our politics. It is no use acting as individuals, we need political change on a broad scale,” she argued.
The group hopes to take advantage of the national rise in popularity of the Green Party, who are currently polling at 7%, and are inviting people of all ages and backgrounds to get in touch if they are interested in joining the party.
