Mayo concerns over housing densities and high rents

THE high rents being paid by families for houses in and around Castlebar has been highlighted -– a house in Breaffy is listed at €1,100 a month.

The stalled Lios na Circe housing development at Milebush is not helping this situation, according to Councillor Michael Kilcoyne, who wants a special meeting to deal with zoning.

It has been dragging on at a time when there is a great need for housing, he said.

Councillor Cyril Burke said density was another issue – it seems to be set at eight to the acre, with 30% of properties detached, which just wasn't feasible for developers.

"We will have a longer housing list," he warned. "€1,100 for a house to rent in Breaffy, and this is going to get worse."
