Fears over new Mayo GAA Centre of Excellence allayed
PLANS for the development of a GAA Centre of Excellents at Lough Lannagh, Castlebar, will not be compromised in any way due to the breakdown in relationships between the Mayo County Board and Mayo GAA International Supporters Foundation.
A row between the two has dominated headlines following the decision by the New York-based foundation to withhold €250,000 raised at a fundraising dinner (other charities also benefited) following the visit of the Mayo team to the Big Apple in the championship last May.
There are growing fears that the fallout from from the saga could threaten the ambitious project, which is a collaborative partnership between Mayo County Council with Mayo GAA, to develop a 27-acre site at Lough Lannagh for sport, tourism and recreation.
County board chairman Mr. Mike Conneely has allayed those fears
He explained: “I can assure clubs in the county that the Lough Lannagh project will be completed.
"At the moment works are ongoing, such as archaeological assessments and environmental impact studies, but this is a project that will be funded with the support of Mayo County Council, Croke Park and other agencies.”
