The deceased, a retired member of the staff of Bus Eireann, served as an independent member of Westport Town Council.

He penned a weekly column for The Connaught Telegraph for a number of years.
Joe had an outstanding singing voice and performed at concerts and other events throughout the county.
The cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Councillor Brendan Mulroy, said he was saddened to learn of the passing of one of the town's best knwon and most popular personalities.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.
