Journalist back in contention for Mayo GAA role
SPORTS journalist Michael Gallagher is officially back in the race to become public relations officer of the Mayo GAA County Board.
He told Community Radio Castlebar that he received an email at 3 p.m. today confirming the reinstatement of his nomination for the role ahead of next month's annual convention.
The outgoing PRO, Paul Cunnane, is seeking re-election but has also been nominated for the post of vice-chairman.
Mr. Gallagher had been told by the county board over a week ago that his nomination had been rejected, the board claiming he had not been a member of his nominating club, Ballycroy, on or before March 31 last.
But the board was forced to perform a U-turn on the ruling after being presented with documentation by Ballycroy proving his membership was fully in order.
Mr. Gallagher said he is now 'putting his foot to the wheel' in order to make up for lost time in canvassing for votes.
"A wind of change is sweeping through Mayo GAA and it is growing into a gale.
"Ultimately that change will be very positive in shaping the future course of the sport in this county," he added.
