Little Puddins: Gift ideas for children with special needs

THIS week I am talking about specific gift ideas for children with special needs, writes Amanda McGuinness in her Little Puddins column for The Connaught Telegraph. It can be difficult at times trying to choose the right gift when your child may have little interest or for whatever reason are unable to play with gifts that are available in the shops.

When I shop for my boys or for my friend’s children who have special needs, I have a list of go-to sources for my gifts. Here are just a few.

Sensational Kids: They have a huge selection of special needs specific gifts for children and adults with special needs. You can purchase gifts in-store at their Claremorris branch or online.

Therapy Subscription Boxes: Sometimes the best gift is one that is super fun but also helps them therapeutically. I subscribe to the monthly OT box from www.occupationaltherapyabc.com.

Activities: If you have a child that has no interest in toys, then pay in advance for activities/lessons they may like. Swimming lessons, bowling, horse riding, dance and music lessons are just a few examples of activities they may like.

Traditional wooden toys: If I purchase toys I like to purchase wooden toys that last the test of time. My favourite online store is www.littleones.ie.

Technology: Many children like my own little ones love using iPads and tablets. It gives them independence and a sense of control.

Therapy sessions: For many struggling families the perfect gift for their child is a voucher to attend a therapy session to help them learn a vital skill. If you are an aunt or uncle or grandparent, consider paying for a therapy session that would take some financial pressure off the parents but also help your niece/nephew or grandchild progress.

Until next time,

Amanda
