Mayo GP angry over undermining of referrals to mental health services
A MAYO GP has expressed disappointment that referrals to the county's mental health services are being undermined.
Senator Dr. Keith Swanick said when he sees a teenager who may be depressed or have an anxiety disorder, he will refer them in good faith to the mental health services.
However, the team reviewing the referral often state it is 'inappropriate'.
The Erris-based representative elaborated: "A professional doctor refers somebody who genuinely needs help and the referral is undermined.
"Sometimes doctors are accused of not even having seen the patient and that they discussed the situation with the parents.
"This is disgraceful.
"Undermining GPs is not good because it is a breakdown in communications between the mental health and community team."
Dr. Swanick said a 24-hour emergency help line would be beneficial in preventing admissions to acute units.
