Mayo sculptor to create major new public art sculpture in Germany

Castlebar based sculptor Cathal McCarthy has been commissioned by the town of Hochstadt in Bavaria Germany to create a major new public art commission in 2020.

This new sculpture commission the artists first major work outside of Ireland will explore themes of peace and the environment.

It will engage young people in Ireland and Germany in a unique way as their work will form part of the ideas for the work.

The sculptor received a warm reception when he travelled to Germany to present his initial ideas for the commission to Mayor Gerald Brehm and members of the Hochstadt Town Council.

The sculpture commission will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Second World War  in 2020.

McCarthy is well known for his artworks in Co. Mayo and nationally which include “The Player” at Ballindine, “Stream Spire” in Mullingar and other works.

He is currently working on a percent for art commission for Sancta Maria secondary school in Louisburgh and was recently awarded a new commission for St. Bhríde National School in Edenderry, Co. Offaly.

The town of Hochstadt in Germany is a twin town of Castlebar and there are regular exchange visits between the two towns.

This new sculpture will form part of the Cultural Mile exhibition for Hochstadt which the town is developing in 2020.

This is a major opportunity for an Irish sculptor to place an artwork into a unique and important location in Germany.
