Mayo's oldest person Delia is set for her 106th Christmas
MAYO's oldest person is looking forward to her 106th Christmas.
Delia Collins got into the spirit of teh festive season with a small glass of Bailey’s at her daughter, Mary’s, home in Islandeady, Castlebar
Apart from a difficulty in hearing, Delia, Mayo’s oldest person (and possibly Ireland’s), is in good form.
Born in Chester, UK, on December 10, 1913, Delia moved to Islandeady and married.
Along with her late husband, she had four children, Peter (RIP), Johnny, Paddy and Mary.
Mary explained that her mum was an extremely hard worker all her life engaging in the traditional farm tasks of milking cows, picking potatoes and saving hay.
“She loved music more than anything else,” said Mary. “She was a good singer in her day. She still loves to listen to country and western music."
Family and friends gathered in the Collins home at Islandeady to celebrate the birthday of the centenarian plus.
Six years ago she received the centenarian medal and cash ‘bounty’ from Áras an Uachtaráin.
