Former Ballina players answer Ireland's call
Rugby players David Heffernan and Caelan Doris, who have been included in the Ireland squad for the upcoming Six Nations Championship, began their journeys in the sport at Heffernan Park, Ballina.
David and Caelan, who line out for Connacht and Leinster respectively at club level, played mini rugby for Ballina before going to Blackrock College in Dublin as boarders.
David is from Ballina and Caelan from Lacken, where his parents moved to from Dublin before he was born.
In a story by Michael Gallagher on the Ballina RFC website, chairman Alan Rowe was quoted as saying David and Caelan's inclusion in the Irish squad for the Six Nations marked one of the best days in the club's history.
“David and Caelan arrived at the club as little boys and came right through the ranks. They richly deserve their call-up and we're absolutely delighted for them,” he added. “This is a very special day for their families, friends and all who contributed so much to their development.”
Mr. Rowe said the achievments by David and Caelan were another 'hugely positive step forward' for Ballina RFC, and illustrated the progression being made at all levels by the club.
