N5 Castlebar – Westport greenway proposal

A GREENWAY between Castlebar and Westport is being mooted for when the new dual carriageway between the towns is operational.

Councillors Donna Sheridan and Ger Deere submitted a notice of motion to the monthly Castlebar Municipal District meeting asking Mayo County Council to commence the process of creating a greenway on the N5 from Castlebar to Westport once this road has been replaced by the new route in two years time.

They were told the Deparment of Transport, Tourism and Sport, in advance of a new funding call for national and regional greenways, has sought expressions of interest from local authorities for funding support to progress potential greenway projects through the planning stages.

Mayo County Council has submitted an expression of interest for a national greenway linking Westport, Castlebar, Foxford and Ballina. If successful, this would involve the identification of a suitable route for a greenway between Castlebar and Westport, which may include use of the existing N5.
