VIDEO: Mayo community hosts 'short distancing' St. Patrick's Day parade
A Mayo community has today hosted a 'short distancing' St. Patrick's Day parade.
Led by an Garda Siochana, it took the form of a car parade and passed through the communities of Lecanvey Louisburgh and Killeen without anybody leaving their vehicles
Local chemist John Staunton, a son of the late Joe Staunton, a member of the 1951 Mayo All-Ireland winning GAA team, was the organiser of the event of over 100 cars which set out at noon from the bottom of the Holy Mountain, Croagh Patrick, in Lecanvey and proceeded to Louisburgh before finishing at Holy Family Killeen Church.
Hundreds of spectators watched the parade from the safety of their homes or cars.
Stated a Aileen McDonnell, Cross, Killeen, who viewed the event: "Our hearts are lifted. We will stand together always in Mayo and Ireland, just three metres apart for now.
"God bless all who took.part and turned out to cheer our heroes on. The West is Awake.
"We will prevail. Love and prayers to all."
