Irish comedian finds Covid-19 isolation on Mayo island

Irish comedian in isolation on Mayo island While the nation gets to grips with the concept of social distancing in light of the covid 19 pandemic, a Dublin-born comedian and musician has taken the extreme step of moving off-shore in an attempt to limit human contact, writes CAOIMHIN ROWLAND.

David O’Doherty outlined his decision to move to his maternal homeland of Achill island in his new and aptly named “isolating” podcast, which is hosted by the ‘Second Captains World Service’.

In the first episode of his new show, the comedian articulates his anxieties surrounding the global situation and explains his personal disappointment of having his own shows cancelled in Australia.

Denying him his annual escape to a more tropical climate. As for this year, he will have to make do with his “favourite place in the world” Achill Island.

However, O’Doherty admits his previous visits to Mayo coincide with the summer months.

Therefore, the challenges of inclement weather, a damp holiday home and lack of entertainment has driven him into his car and onto the airwaves.

Past-times on the island for the ‘Edinburgh Fringe Festival’ stalwart include playing board games from the previous decade, cycling along the golden strand and repairing broached fences.

The first two episodes of his new podcast series are available to listen to on soundcloud/secondcaptains.
