Tribute paid to former Ballinrobe GAA star on his passing
Ballinrobe GAA Club has paid tribute to former player, Joe "Brocky" Jennings, who has died at the age of 84 in Dublin.
The tribute, penned by John Flannelly, chairperson, stated: "Joe, a tenacious halfback, represented Ballinrobe with distinction and won two Flanagan Cup medals in 1951 and 1953 and, in 1953, he won an All-Ireland medal with Mayo at minor level, defeating Clare in Croke Park.
"Joe played in the Connacht semi-final, scoring a point.
"However he picked up an injury that would rule him out of the final and indeed the All-Ireland semi-final but recovered to line out with another Ballinrobe stalwart, Tom Treacy Sr., in Croke Park where Mayo defeated Clare 2-11 by 1-6. In 1953,
"Joe played with the Connacht Colleges team, representing Ballinrobe CBS, an achievement that can't be underestimated as the likes of St Jarlath's College, Tuam, Summerhill College, Sligo, and St Muredeach's College, Ballina, usually dominated the selections.
"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."
The deceased, of Rathmines, Dublin, (formerly of Witham, Essex) and late of Rahard, Ballinrobe, was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Ellen, his brothers, Bill, Mike, Vincie, Tom and John and his sisters Marie, Eva, Kathleen and Theresa.
He is sadly missed and remembered with much love and affection by his wife Margo, and family Ivan, Paul, David and Rhoda, their partners Siobhan, Philippa, Orna and Maidhcí, grandchildren Joe, Meghan, Mabel, Florence, Sulán, Bébhinn and Lugha, sisters Bridie, Vera and Frances, nieces, nephews, neighbours and friends, to whom sympathy is tendered..
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
