Emergency services at scene of Mayo train and car collision

THE emergency services are at the scene of a collision between a car and train in Mayo.

The collision, involving the 1.15 p.m. Westport to Heuston (Dublin) passenger train, occurred earlier this afternoon at Kilnageer level crossing, Breaffy, near Castlebar.

Initial reports suggest that nobody was seriously injured in the impact.

The train is still at the scene and arrangements are being made to bus passengers to their final destination.

The unmanned level crossing, where the incident occurred, is regarded as one of the most dangerous in the country due to the number of serious ‘near misses’ between trains and road users.

The crossing is on a frequently used rural road with a school and creche nearby.

In 2013, the junction recorded a quarter of all near misses on Irish crossings out of 24 nationally.
