Five young Mayo sports stars secure bursary awards

Mayo County Council has announced the winners of the Martin Sheridan Bursary which provides financial assistance to Mayo athletes as they strive to make an impact on the National, European and International Olympic stages.

Councillor Brendan Mulroy, cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, has congratulated the recipients.

He said: “All of the recipients of the Martin Sheridan Bursary Award for 2020 are high achievers and natural leaders in their field of sporting activity and are fully deserving of their awards.”

The 2020 Martin Sheridan Bursary recipients are:

Niamh O’Neill (Athletics) is a member of the Connaught High Performance Athletic Squad, she has won 44 All-Ireland medals in both indoor and outdoor championships while representing her club and school.

Eoghan Lavin (Boxing) has competed for Ireland at the Ireland versus USA boxing International, winning gold. He has seven national boxing titles.

Hazel Finn (Basketball) is an Irish basketball International and has been selected to play for Ireland in the upcoming European Championships in Austria in 2021.

Hugh Armstrong (Athletics) is aiming to represent Ireland at the next year's Tokyo Olympics, he has run the fastest marathon ever run by a Mayo man.

Roisin Murphy (Tennis) is an upcoming tennis player and is ranked No. 5 in Ireland at Under-18 level. Roisin is part of the Connacht squad and trains in Dublin on a regular basis.
