Lands identified for new Westport sporting facilities

WESTPORT has a shortage of playing pitches for sport.

A 14-acre site to develop amenities for sport has been identified by a local councillor on the Golf Course Road.

Councillor Christy Hyland, in his departing speech as cathoirleach of the west Mayo municipal district, said he hoped the lands in question could be set aside for sporting facilities.

“There is a shortage of pitches in Westport and it would alleviate it,” he said, adding that they they could also look at developing a community centre there.

Clubs, such as the local GAA club, were under serious pressure. Both the Gaelic and soccer clubs have huge uptake in membership.
