Death of Delia Collins, one of Ireland’s oldest residents
The Islandeady community in Castlebar is in mourning following the death of Delia Collins (nèe McDermott), one of Ireland’s oldest residents.
Delia, who lived with her daughter Mary and family in the townland of Leitir, Islandeady, celebrated her 106th birthday last December.
She was a great lover of music throughout her life, especially country and western, and liked to sing at family gatherings.
Born in Chester, UK, on December 10, 1913, Delia moved to Islandeady and married.
Along with her late husband, she had four children, Peter RIP, Tom, Paddy and Mary.
Delia attributed her long life to hard farm work, love of music and the odd glass of Bailey’s and the company of friends and neighbours.
The details of funeral arrangements will be announced later today.
