Two new children's playgrounds officially opened in west Mayo

TWO new children's playgrounds have been officially opened in west Mayo.

The facilities at Aughagower and Achill Sound were launched by Deputy Michael Ring, the former Minister for Rural and Community.

Speaking in Aughagower, he stated: “I am absolutely delighted that this marvellous playground, which has been supported by my former department, has had such a positive impact on the local community.

"By providing targeted investments such as this playground to rural towns, villages and outlying areas, government funding is helping to improve people’s quality of life in Mayo and throughout rural Ireland.

“Playgrounds have been recognised as the way forward and Mayo County Council have embraced this concept.

"Aughagower Community Playground is an excellent amenity for the children of Aughagower, the surrounding hinterland and indeed visitors to the area.

"This playground is a wonderful addition to the playschool and community and I congratulate all involved in this excellent example of what can be done when everyone works together.

“In my capacity as Minister for Rural and Community Development I had the opportunity to engage with people around the country and see the wonderful results of the work of many local communities big and small.

"Partnership and community involvement is vital in all areas of life and that partnership and the community spirit that has been evident in the small rural towns and villages all across the country in recent years under initiatives such as the CLÁR Programme, the Rural Recreation Schemes, REDZ and the Town & Village Renewal Scheme.

"The passion and commitment of local people to make rural Ireland a place where people want to live, work and prosper.

“I was very happy to be in a position to officially open Aughagower Community Playground and to see first-hand the positive impact of Government funding.

"I hope the community of Aughagower and all who use this playground have many happy hours of fun and play in this safe and secure play environment."

Speaking at the Achill Sound event, Deputy Ring: “I am delighted to see this playground, which was funded under the Clár Programme, come to fruition.

"Funding of €50,000 was provided for this facility and it is a wonderful additional to the community in Achill.

“I am delighted that such an excellent amenity is now available for the children of Achill Sound, the surrounding hinterland and indeed visitors to the area.

"This playground is an excellent example of what can be done when everyone works together.

"I hope the children using this safe and secure play environment, have many happy hours of fun and play.”
