ONE of Mayo’s largest soccer clubs has been granted permission to enter a third team into the Mayo Football League this year.

Westport United, who have teams set to compete in the Elvery Sports Super League and the Castlecourt Hotel Premier League this season, received confirmation last week that a request to enter a third team had been successful. This team will play in the CMR Fire & Security League Two division, which is set to begin on the weekend of August 15/16.

They are the first club to field three teams in the league since Castlebar Celtic in 2014.

In email sent to clubs by league secretary John Durkan, he stated that the division will now have seven teams and they will play each other twice over 14 rounds.

“We are here to provide as much football for players as possible and promote and develop our league,” he concluded.
