Two people rescued from Croagh Patrick, one by helicopter

Two people have been rescued from Croagh Patrick in separate incidents yesterday evening.

The Mayo Mountain Rescue Team was tasked by An Garda Siochana at 6.19 p.m. to assist a female casualty who had sustained a lower leg injury on the descent of the mountain .

She was located just below the ‘shoulder’ on the Murrisk side.

A first response team and stretcher party were dispatched from the base at the back of the Reek.

While en route, they found another another female casualty who required immediate medical assistance which was provided by the first response team.

The Coastguard helicopter was tasked to the second woman and Irish Coastguard personnel from the Westport unit assisted on the mountain.

At the same time, the stretcher party continued down from the shoulder to the first casualty, providing first aid for the lower leg injury and then stretchered the casualty down to Murrisk to a waiting HSE ambulance.

The second person was evacuated from the mountain by R118 to hospital for further treatment.

A statement by the Mayo Mountain Rescue Team said: “The team to thank Westport Coastguard Unit for their assistance on the Mountain yesterday evening.

"A great example of the Coastguard, MMRT, the HSE and An Garda Siochana working together.

“The team wishes a speedy recovery to both casualties. The team was stood down at 10.29 p.m.”
