€463,000 for repair of social housing stock

MAYO County Council is to receive €463,078 from the Department of Housing under the July jobs stimulus.

The funding will be used for the refurbishment of existing social housing stock within the county so they can be re-let to individuals and families on the local authority housing list.

Confirming the allocation, Minister for Agriculture Dara Calleary said: “This is significant funding for Mayo County Council and we will be asking them to take immediate steps to ensure that work on refurbishing vacant homes begins straight away.

“The funding will make extra social housing stock available and will have a positive knock-on effect in economic terms for local builders, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, painters, etc.”

He added: “In the Programme for Government we committed to reducing Ireland’s homeless numbers and to making available extra housing stock to our local authorities.

“In the July stimulus we committed to getting Ireland back to work after the horrific effects of the pandemic and this funding of half a million euro will help Mayo based tradesmen to get back into employment.

“I am pleased that the funding has been secured and I trust that the council will now proceed to undertake the works as a matter of urgency.”
