Safety works to start on 'notorious' central Mayo level crossing and fly-over bridge is planned
Works are to start next week on the controversial Kilnageer level crossing on the Breaffy to Belcarra roadway.
New safety measures have been agreed following a meeting of local residents, elected representatives and officials of Irish Rail.
Another significant development is the fact Mayo County Council and Irish Rail are working on the design of a new fly-over bridge, for which a planning application will be lodged shortly.
Councillor Cyril Burke has welcomed this news.
"Its great to see the positive engagement from all involved to make the crossing safer for motorists.
"This crossing has been notoriously dangerous for years and it's time this action is being taken,” he added.
A motorist had a lucky escape at the location earlier this year, managing to get clear before a train struck the vehicle.
