Smoky coal ban comes into effect today
A SMOKY coal ban comes into effect in two Mayo towns today (September 1).
From today, the marketing, distribution, sale or use of smoky coal in Castlebar and Ballina is prohibited under solid fuel regulations.
The regulations were brought in for the protection of human health and should have a noticeable effect.
Mayo County Council's environmental enforcement team will enforce the regulations.
