Yachtsman rescued from rocks in Clew Bay

A LONE yachtsman was rescued from rocks in Clew Bay by rescue services in the early hours of this morning.

The Achill Island RNLI Lifeboat was launched to assist an Irish Coastguard helicopter in rescuing the yachtsman.

The yacht went onto rocks near Roy, in the inner reaches of Clew Bay, and rescue teams responded after a ‘Mayday’ call issued from the vessel.

The yachtsman was successfully winched from the yacht in challenging conditions and flown to Sligo University Hospital.

Achill RNLI, in a social post, said the lifeboat returned to its moorings shortly after 7 a.m.
