North Mayo tourism spot 'attracting as many visitors as Croagh Patrick'
DOWNPATRICK Head in north Mayo is proving to be a major success as a tourist attraction.
According to Mayo County Council, there have been over 300,000 visitors this year – equivalent to the amount who go to Croagh Patrick.
Croagh Patrick's advantage is that it is served by a car park and toilet facilities, Councillor Michael Loftus noted at a meeting of Ballina Municipal District, where he called on Mayo County Council to build a similar facilities for Downpatrick Head.
“I feel it's something we have to look at seriously,” he said. “It would pay for itself too if you had a parking fee going into the car park.”
After his fellow councillors indicated their support for the notice of motion, the head of Ballina Municipal District, Declan Turnbull, said the council would put 'renewed effort' into the matter.
