Hikers rescued from Mayo mountains
Hikers have been rescued from Mweelrea and Croagh Patrick.
Mayo Mountain Rescue Team was tasked by An Garda Siochana yesterday afternoon to Mweelrea mountain to assist coastguard helicopter Rescue 118 official with the rescue of an injured hiker on the ramp section of the mountain.
The full team were tasked along with Cleggan Coast Guard and Westport Coast Guard to assist.
While en route to Mweelrea, the team received a second tasking from National Ambulance Service (NAS) at 2.05 p.m. to assist another casualty who had sustained a lower leg injury on Croagh Patrick.
As R118 and the local land based units were on scene at Mweelrea and able to airlift the casualty direct to hospital, MMRT were redirected to Croagh Patrick.
MMRT’s first response team located the casualty near the top of the sheep track on the northern side of the mountain and provided first aid treatment.
An MMRT stretcher party was also tasked to the location.
The casualty was stretchered down the mountain to the NAS ambulance and transported to Mayo University Hospital for further treatment.
A MMRT spokesperson said: "The team would like to wish both casualty’s well and extend our thanks to all the emergency service units involved."
