Newport-Pontoon road relief route proposal for Castlebar

A CASTLEBAR councillor has proposed that a relief road joining the Pontoon and Newport roads in the town be examined.

Councillor Martin McLoughlin said the route would take pressure off the Chapel Street junction and on traffic coming in the Newport Road to Castlebar.

He was speaking at a Castlebar Municipal District meeting this week.

A road was proposed in the past but it was 'totally resisted' by residents, Councillor Michael Kilcoyne informed his colleague. As a result, councillors removed it from their plan.

Councillor McLoughlin said he was delighted that it hadn't gone ahead at the time given the way the town has developed since.

What he was asking about was an outer relief road which would be a lot further out of the town than what had been proposed at the time.
