Anger over historic Mayo cemetery being used for drinking parties

Visitors to the historic Old Cemetery in Castlebar are upset to see the location being used on a regular basis for drinking parties.

Broken bottles, discarded cans and disposed carrier bags have been littering a section of the graveyard over the past number of weeks.

Up to three refuse bags of rubbish were collected and removed from the location by one concerned citizen a few days ago.

The person, who wishes to remain anonymous, said it has long been a problem there - but it's got particularly worse in recent weeks.

"It's unacceptable what is happening and has to be stopped.

"Those responsible appear to gather at one particular sheltered spot because that is where most of the refuse is being left.

"I appeal to them to stop this behaviour," the person stated.
