Junction improvements at Castlebar's Market Square

WORKS are to take place to improve pedestrian safety at the Market Square/Dunnes Stores junction in Castlebar.

Turning in between the two phone shops, there were two yellow flashing lights but nothing on the ground, Councillor Michael Kilcoyne has highlighted.

For motorists, sometimes it was difficult to see the lights and there should be something on the ground, he told a local municipal district meeting, rather than having a pedestrian getting 'whacked' with a car.

The councillor has received several complaints about the location.

Engineer Ann Sweeney said the council plans to put in a raised crossing as part of traffic calming.

It's expected to progress the project in the new year.
