Mayo TD seeking explanation from Health Minister over efforts to keep Claremorris school open despite Covid outbreak
A Mayo TD has issued a statement on the decision of Claremorris Boys National School to close early for Christmas due to Covid-19 concerns.
Deputy Alan Dillon said: “The board of management and principal took a very difficult decision last night to close the school from today to January 5, inclusive of Christmas holidays.
"Two full class are currently isolating and being tested and re-tested as necessary since last Thursday, December 3, under the direction of Public Health.
"I have written to Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly highlighting my concerns.
"I want to know the justification for keeping the school open when there was a significant outbreak in nearly all classrooms.
"I will be calling for an immediate response on this today."
"There are currently 125 pupils attending the all-boys school with five mainstream teachers, a teaching principal, two special educational teachers and one part-time shared resource teacher.
"On Monday last, HSE Public Health informed the principal that a further number of pupils, particularly in fifth and third class, had unfortunately been identified as testing positive for Covid19.
"Despite not being able to secure the support of the HSE Public Health, the principal and board of management announced the closer of the school on their website.
"It is disappointing to hear from parents of pupils attending the school that direction and support from HSE Public Health on the appropriate case of action was not forthcoming.
"We need to understand why and what their justification was to keep the school open and I will be pursuing the Minister for Health to ensure these questions are answer and a full report on the matter is issued.
“This is a very difficult decision for the principal and board of management to have to make and I want to take the opportunity to wish them all well, and those effect by Covid 19 a speedy recovery."
