Top Mayo GAA official hits out at torrent of abuse from 'faceless' twitter account

The secretary of Mayo GAA has revealed he and his fellow officers have been subjected to a torrent of abuse by 'faceless' people on social media over the past number of months.

In his annual report to convention today, Dermot Butler said social media platforms, when used properly, can be very beneficial - but on the other hand when used maliciously it can cause great upset and pain to people.

He explained: “I, along with some of my fellow officers, have been the subject of much comment on a particular twitter account which is run by 'faceless' people.

“Over the past number of months I have been subjected to a torrent of abuse on this particular twitter account and to be honest it’s becoming a bit boring.

“I have had one of my accounts hacked by these people and they have put commentary up on this site purporting to come from me, very innovative indeed.

“To the individuals who run this 'faceless' account I say to you publish all the 'factual evidence' that you claim to have and if it’s so 'factually' correct reveal yourselves and don’t be hiding behind 'your mother's apron'.

“You have no place in Mayo GAA, you are not the voice of the clubs in Mayo, as much as you would like to think you are.

“If people don’t agree with your views you ridicule them, to me you are like people who in order to get attention would cause a row at their own wedding.”
