No plastic signs on businesses under Mayo development plan
PLASTIC signs on shopfronts are getting a 'thumbs down' in the new Mayo county development plan.
A draft of the plan is due to go on public display in the coming week and the public will then have 12 weeks to make submissions to Mayo County Council.
Under the plan it is proposed that plastic and neon signs will not be permitted on businesses in Mayo.
At a meeting of the local authority today (Monday), Westport-based Councillor Christy Hyland called out the breweries on their signage.
There were beautiful shopfronts that had been maintained for generations, he said, but then the breweries put up their signs and it took from them.
The signs, he said, had destroyed the front of many pubs, and he called on the breweries to consult with property owners and council planners.
Businesses, he said, wanted to engage with the local heritage of their area.
