Safety barriers erected at fatal accident location

NINE years after a tragic road accident claimed the lives of two members of a Mayo family, barriers are being erected at the spot where they died.

Sandra Herbert from Knockmore and her teenage daughter Rachel died in December 2011 when their car hit black ice on the Knockmore to Corroy road, resulting in their vehicle overturning into a river.

A jury at an inquest into their deaths recommended that barriers be erected along the roadside to prevent vehicles entering the river.

Last January, local Councillor Seamus Weir voiced the family's dismay that those works had not been done in the intervening years.

He had good news to report to the December meeting of Mayo County Council's roads and transportation strategic policy committee – the safety barriers are going up. And the Herbert family are delighted, he said.

A commitment had been given and Councillor Weir was delighted the works were now being done.
