‘Destination cafe’ proposal in pipeline for west Mayo

A PROPOSAL to create a 'destination cafe' focusing on speciality coffee and brunch in Louisburgh has been submitted to Mayo County Council planners.

The cafe will champion quality and consistency in a friendly and accessible space.

Applicant Louis Freiter is seeking a change of use of an existing ground floor to a cafe/retail outlet at The Square in Louisburgh.

The vision for the cafe is explained in documentation submitted to the local authority.

It sets out how the space will be bike-friendly in an attempt to attract trade via the Wild Atlantic Way and the increasingly popular cycle tourism sector. It is also planned to make the most of increased visitors to this part of the country travelling by car or on foot.

'In addition to this, we hope that the cafe will become a hub for the local community. This will be achieved by championing local produce and using the cafe space as a base for community events and social enterprise.

'Our vision sees us as a cafe with a unique contemporary food offering that people will be prepared to travel to visit,' it sets out.

The premises will also have a small retail space selling coffee equipment, deli items, local artisan produce and a small selection of bike related equipment such as essential spares and accessories.

The application includes a sample menu to give an idea of what it is intended to serve, with opening hours proposed to be Tuesday to Sunday from 8.30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
