Mast upgrade to support remote working and learning on Inishturk
EIR are looking to improve connectivity for islanders on Inishturk.
The company has applied to Mayo County Council for the go-ahead for the replacement of an existing telecommunications support structure with attached equipment (overall height 16m) with a proposed new 15m lattice tower support structure (overall height of 17.5m) carrying equipment transferred from the existing structure and the additions of new telecommunications antennas, dishes and associated equipment.
The mast is located at Bellavaum, 770 metres southwest of the harbour.
Documentation submitted to council planners sets out how the existing lattice support structure is in poor condition, requiring attention. It is not capable of supporting additional equipment for existing or potential new operators and would also be of inadequate height and structural capacity for additional operators' equipment.
The proposed replacement support structure would make the site available to other telecommunications and broadband operators.
The replacement infrastructure would ensure enhancement and improvement of telecommunications services on Inishturk into the future.
Planners have been told how the current site is too low and results in severe clipping in the populated area of the island, resulting in inadequate service for indoor high speed mobile broadband or voice services.
Eir's current indoor coverage in this area is 'very patchy' and users experience missed calls and a poor quality of service.
An upgrade would greatly support customers.
The board of Inishturk Community Club CLG confirmed their support for the project in a letter to the council.
“This development is essential in the continuation and further development of remote working and learning opportunities on the island,” they said.
