Mayo players to feature in TG4's AFL Women's season coverage
TG4 has announced that it will showing weekly matches and highlights of the upcoming Australian Football League Women's season, starting tomorrow week (Saturday, January 30, 5.10 p.m.).
AFL Women's is Australia's national semi-professional Australian Rules football league for female players and 14 teams will be participating in the competition.
There are 14 Irish players signed up with clubs in the Women's AFL this season, including five from Mayo - Cora Staunton, Sarah Rowe, Aileen Gilroy, and Niamh and Grace Kelly from Mayo.
This is the first time that extensive coverage of the AFL Women's competition will be shown on Irish television.
The 14 teams will battle over 12 weekends to see who will reach the Grand Final in April.
TG4's agreement with the AFL will allow them to show deferred coverage of matches each weekend as well as weekly highlights, starting tomorrow week.
“We are extremely pleased that TG4 have agreed a deal with the Australian Football League (AFL) to broadcast matches from the NAB AFL Women’s competition,” said TG4′s head of sport, Rónán Ó Coisdealbha.
“There are a lot of players from Ireland who play in the AFLW so the interest is very high. We would like to thank the AFL for giving us the opportunity to showcase their sport in Ireland.”
