New Deputy Coroner appointed for District of Mayo
WILLIAM O’Connor, LL.B., Solicitor, Swinford, has been appointed as the Deputy Coroner for the District of Mayo.
The appointment was approved by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Helen McEntee, following the proposal by the Coroner, with the approval of Mayo County Council.
He replaces Paul Cunney, who had acted as Deputy Coroner for some years. He has moved to practice law in Ballina, which is in the Coronial District of North Mayo.
William O’Connor is a partner in the firm of P. O’Connor & Son Solicitors whose great-grandfather, Pat O’Connor, was Coroner from 1917 through to his death in 1942, whilst his grandfather, Thomas V. O’Connor, was Coroner until his death in 1988.
Pat O’Connor, the current Coroner for the District of Mayo, said that he was 'delighted that the tradition of public service by the O’Connor family in Mayo is being continued by William, the fourth generation of lawyers in the family'.
