Castlebar pedestrian crossing and safety issues raised

THE need for a pedestrian crossing on the old Turlough Road and the issue of speed in The Oaks housing estate was raised at the monthly Castlebar Municipal District meeting.

The issues were highlighted by Councillor Ger Deere who said since the opening of the new filling station and convenience shop in the area, there has been an increased volume of pedestrians crossing this busy road.

Between residents living along the road and several housings estates in the locality, there is a population of several hundred using the road.

“There is a serious issue with speed in the area so the installation of a pedestrian crossing is urgently required,” he said.

Also, residents of the nearby Oaks have highlighted an ongoing issue of speed in the estate. Traffic volumes are up, particularly in respect of online deliveries, and with children not at school, they are out and about playing.

Said Councillor Deere: “I look forward to council officials coming back with some measures to help curb this issue and I also intend to speak to the road safety officer and An Garda Síochána to discuss this further.”
