Mayo island receives connectivity service boost

CONNECTIVITY for islanders on Inishturk is to be improved.

Eir has received the go-ahead for the replacement of the existing telecommunications mast (height 16m) with a proposed new lattice tower support structure (overall height of 17.5m), carrying equipment transferred from the existing structure and the additions of new telecommunications antennas, dishes and associated equipment.

The mast is located at Bellavaum, 770 metres southwest of the harbour.

The board of Inishturk Community Club CLG have supported the project, saying it was 'essential in the continuation and further development of remote working and learning opportunities on the island'.

The existing structure is in poor condition and not capable of supporting additional equipment for existing or potential new operators. It is also inadequate in height and structural capacity for additional operators' equipment.

The current site is also too low and results in severe clipping in the populated area of the island, resulting in inadequate service for indoor high speed mobile broadband or voice services.

The new infrastructure will, planners were told, ensure enhancement and improvement of telecommunications services on Inishturk into the future.
