Housing plan for former Achill school site
THE former secondary school site in Achill Sound is to be developed for housing.
Mayo County Council has purchased the grounds and a social housing scheme of 12 to 20 units will be constructed there.
Local Councillor Paul McNamara, at a special municipal district housing meeting, said he has been asking the council to secure sites for social housing for a number of years, to help regenerate rural areas such as Achill, Ballycroy and Mulranny.
There are 41 households on the housing list between Achill and Ballycroy and there was need for these homes in the parish.
He noted how they were informed that 16 houses are to be completed in Mulranny by 2022, which was great for that area, he said.
This, and the Achill project, was welcome news, he stated. Developments such as these would ensure there is life and families in these areas, supporting amenities such as local schools.
